5-Minute Organization Hacks for Your Office
Today I’m sharing a few of my favorite 5-minute organization hacks for your office. These simple organization tasks will help you to get more organized fast (in 5 minutes or less)!
I love these 5-minute organization hacks because they take the overwhelm out of getting more organized. Just by choosing one tiny actionable step, you make positive strides toward better organization.
These organization hacks are also a great way to make the most of those snippets of down time that pop up throughout the day:
- Waiting for a conference call, webinar, or meeting to start
- When you’re listening to a podcast that doesn’t require your complete attention
- While you’re waiting for an item to download
- When it’s almost time to leave for a client meeting but not quite
- When you need to get up and move a little before starting that next time block
Any time you have a few minutes you can choose one of these tasks and get a little more organized.
And over time these 5-minute tasks add up to some major organization and productivity mojo!
Let’s jump into the 5-minute organization hacks for your office!
Get Everything Off the Floor
There’s nothing more frustrating than tripping and stumbling your way to your desk or workspace.
By clearing your office floor, you’ll improve the organization in your office and significantly decrease your work day frustration.
Set a timer for 5 minutes and move quickly through your office:
- Throw trash away
- Stack loose papers in a bin to corral them (you can sort them later, but you’ll still know where to find them if you need them)
- Load up a basket or bin with items that belong in another area or room (then plan on returning them to their rightful place at your next break or at the end of your workday)
- Put books and magazines on the shelves
- Break down boxes and put them in the recycling bin
Just get your floor cleared!
Having a clear path to your desk will make your work day so much easier and significantly cut the clutter littering your office!

Clear the Top of Your Desk
Nothing increases your stress level like sitting sit down at a cluttered desk and trying to work.
Shuffling piles, notebooks, writing utensils, and yesterday’s projects just to find a spot to work is a recipe for poor focus and a serious lack of productivity.
Give yourself a positive and productive start to your work time by clearing the top of your desk:
- Put writing utensils away
- File papers
- Return books and binders to their shelves
- Throw away or recycle items
- Wipe down your desk top, if necessary, to clear the dust, lint, and itty bitty irritants
Your first go at clearing the top of your desk might take longer than 5 minutes. You can either set a timer for 5 minutes then pick it up again the next day (or later in the day, if you have time). Or you can take the few extra minutes to complete this project. Whatever works best for you.
Hopefully, you’ll get into the habit of clearing the top of your desk on a regular basis (like at the end of each work day), and it will take you less and less time!

Set Up an Office Inbox
It’s important to have a catch-all filter for items coming into your office.
An office inbox allows you to:
- Control the flow of information and papers into your office
- Avoid piles taking over your desk
- Review all of the information coming into your office
But you can’t just set an inbox on the corner of your desk and call it done….

USE Your Office Inbox
You have to actually USE your inbox and process that items in it!
Be sure to set aside 5 minutes each day to process the items in your inbox or you’ll have another dumping spot in your workspace, which is so NOT what we’re trying to do here!
Your 5 minutes of inbox emptying could be first thing in the morning, or it might be more convenient for you to take a few minutes at the end of the day.
Either way, plan 5 minutes each day to take action on the items in your inbox. You’ll keep your inbox from overflowing, stay ahead of incoming items, and maintain your office organization with a small time investment!

Complete a 5-Minute Brain Dump
Although, not technically an office organization hack, completing a brain dump clears your mind and helps you to create a master list of tasks, which helps you to be more organized overall!
Take out a piece of paper and a writing utensil, start a timer for 5 minutes, and write fast and furiously.
Try to write down everything swirling around in that vortex in your mind: things that need to be done, projects that must be completed, appointments and events and parties that need to be remembered…write it all down!
When the timer goes off take a deep breath and decide if you feel relief from the clutter in your brain. If you’re still writing items down or if your brain still feels foggy and full, start the timer and write fast and furiously for another 5 minutes.
Once you’ve cleared your brain clutter, take the list you wrote and highlight your top priority tasks. You can then add them to your to-do list for the day or week.
