9 Easy Ways to Show Your Office Some Love
Valentine’s Day is this week….

I’m not normally a big Valentine’s person, but the past few weeks I’ve been struggling with a lack of motivation and focus.
I often find that a home office that’s disorganized, dirty, or just plain blah is at the heart of my lost mojo. So, I decided it was the perfect time to show my office some love!
These tips can help you improve the organization, design, and “feel” of your office. They apply to small or spacious offices and can be completed on a budget.

#1 Clear the Floor
Not only is clearing your office floor free, it saves you the frustration of tripping your way to your desk each day! It will also improve the overall organization in your office.
Set a timer for 10-15 minutes and move quickly through your office.
- Throw trash away
- Stack loose papers in a bin to corral them (you can sort them later, but you’ll still know where to find them if you need them)
- Make a pile, or better yet, load up a basket or bin with items that belong in another area or room (then plan on returning them to their rightful place at your next break or at the end of your workday)
- Put books on the shelves
- Create additional bins for in-progress projects and the supplies associated with them
- If necessary, create stacks of related items against the wall to sort later
- Just get your floor cleared
Clearing the floor of your office is a quick and easy way to show your office some love!

#2 Clear Your Desk
It’s stressful and irritating to try to work at a cluttered desk. Shuffling piles, notebooks, writing utensils, and yesterday’s projects just to find a spot to work is a recipe for poor focus and productivity.

Give your office (and especially your workspace) a little extra TLC by clearing your desk!
- Put writing utensils away
- File papers
- Return books and binders to their shelves
- Throw away or recycle items
- Wipe down your desk top, if necessary, to clear the dust, lint, and itty bitty irritants
To avoid the previously mentioned stress and irritation, create a habit of clearing your desk at the end of every workday. Your stress level will decrease and your office will become a haven for productive work time!

#3 Add a Comfy Chair
Nothing makes your office feel more homey than a comfy chair. And it’s perfect for when you need a change of scenery and want to work away from your desk!
Here are a few examples to get your home-office-loving creativity going:
Abby Lawson of Just a Girl and Her Blog has two comfy chairs in her office!
I love these chairs that Melissa George of Polished Habitat added to her home office!
Dear Lillie Studio has a comfy chair behind the desk, too!
And don’t feel like you have to run out and buy a new chair to add to your home office! Shop your home: borrow a chair from another room for a few weeks or venture into the basement or storage space to see what’s hiding there!
#4 Lighting
Lighting can make or break your home office space!
Invest in some daylight bulbs to brighten up your space (4000-5000 Kelvin is best). These AmazonBasics 60 Watt Daylight Bulbs are 5000 Kelvin and you can pick them up inexpensively. The boost in quality lighting, energy, and motivation will make them well worth the cost!
Another way to show your office some love with lighting is to actually let in the daylight! Open your blinds and give your windows a quick wash to let the sunshine in.

Finally, add task lighting to your workspace. I recently put a lamp on my desk and was amazed at what a difference I felt in my energy and motivation, not to mention how much easier it was to see!
#5 Good, Healthy Scents
Not only do good scents make a home office a more pleasant space to work in, they can also improve our mood, increase our energy, and improve our focus!
Pick up a great smelling soy candle, a reed diffuser, or put an electric diffuser in your home office that you can use with quality essential oils.
The wonderful scents will make you smile and make your home office a space you love to occupy!

#6 Plants and Fresh Flowers
Show your office some love by bringing in faux or real plants and/or some fresh flowers!

Nothing gives your office a homey feel like a plant or flowers. The beautiful greens bring a touch of nature and the outside world to your office while the blooms and colors of fresh flowers add visual interest to a space that can easily become blah!
#7 Give It a Good Clean
There’s nothing like a good scrub to refresh your home office!
Here are the tasks I complete when I want to show my office some love with a solid cleaning:
- Empty the trash and recycling bins.
- Launder curtains, pillows, and throws, if applicable (check tags for specific recommendations).
- Clean the ceiling light fixture.
- Wipe down floor lamp, if applicable.
- Use a lint roller to clean desk lamp shade or wipe down desk lamp.
- Dust all surfaces with a microfiber cloth and a dusting spray; move items and dust under them.
- Wipe your desk, drawers, and any handles with a sanitizing spray.
- Turn your computer off and wipe it down with a microfiber cloth; I like to use a cotton swap with a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol on it to clean between my keys or to clean up any sticky areas (again check manufacturer recommendations).
- Vacuum thoroughly.
- Throw open the window to bring in some fresh air!
Ah, doesn’t that feel amazing?! After deep cleaning my office I’m always so excited to sit down and get to work!

- Add colorful printables to your daily routines (psst, I know where you can grab some free printables! 😉 ).
- Buy colorful organizing tools to add a pop of color to your office AND help you be more organized!
