An Easy and Affordable Solution for Office Cord Clutter
Office cord clutter is not only annoying, it also mars the organized look of your home office. But there’s a simple solution for your cable management woes!
This easy DIY project will have you saying “bye-bye” to computer and desk cord clutter and “hello” to beautiful office organization.
Let’s get started with this super simple and affordable way to hide cord clutter and provide storage for your in-use cords!
The Maddening Eyesore That is Cord Clutter
Here’s a peek into the madness that preceded today’s DIY project.

This area was such an eyesore, and it was one of the first things I saw when I entered my home office.
NOT a productive way to start a workday!

I knew I wanted to tackle my office cord clutter as part of my home office makeover, but by the time I finally got around to this project, my budget was G-O-N-E.
So, I had to get creative and thrifty!
This project isn’t anything new, but I’ve been sharing each step in my home office makeover, and I wanted to include this one, too. Plus, I was amazed at what a HUGE difference this simple and inexpensive project made in my home office!
Little things DO make a difference. 🙂
Okay, enough of my yapping. Let’s jump into the tutorial!
How to Banish Office Cord Clutter
This project is so easy that I almost feel silly including a tutorial, but here we go!
Supplies
This easy and affordable solution for office cord clutter only requires a few supplies.
This post contains affiliate links for your convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy. As always, my favorable opinion of affordable office organizing supplies is 100% my own. I only recommend products that I use and love.
Supplies:
- Storage Box with a Lid and Cut Outs for Handles
- Power Strip Surge Protector (with multiple outlets and USB charging ports, as needed)
- Cable Ties (I like these or these)
That’s it—only requires 3 supplies.
Depending on your home office set up, you may want to add cable guides, as well (see below).
Optional Supply:
Before we start: if you haven’t already, decide where you’re going to locate your cord clutter solution, preferably near an outlet.

STEP #1
Place your power strip in the storage box and thread the plug end through one of the handle cut outs.

This is also a good time to bundle any extra cord from the power strip and tuck it neatly in the box.
STEP #2
Thread the plug end of each of your cords through the handle cut outs (from outside the storage box into it).

STEP #3
Choose the best power strip outlet for each cord and plug them in.
Originally a couple of my cords were coming from my desk and a couple were coming from my computer tower on the other side. But after wrestling with the cords, I decided to have them all come into the storage box on the same side.

I then arranged the plugs accordingly.
STEP #4
Bundle each of your cords with the cable ties and place them as neatly as possible in the storage box.

Depending on the number of cords you have, you may have to move things around a bit here. Adjust as necessary.
STEP #5 (OPTIONAL)
Use cable guides to position exposed cords as necessary.
I chose not to use cable guides, because I just have two cords that cross my desk and go down the side (you can see them in the photo below).

Not sure what’s happening with the carpet up there… :\
In the future, should I choose to have those cords travel along the underside of my desk, I’ll use cable guides to position them.
They’re not bugging me at this point, so I’m going to leave them alone.
An Easy and Affordable Solution for Office Cord Clutter

One question, what size box did you use – Small, Medium or Large?
thank you so much!
Hi, Sally ~
I’m excited that YOU’RE excited about this project! 🙂 Thumbs up for super easy DIY projects, right?!
The box I used is about the size of the small one (listed under “Supplies”). But you’ll want to consider the size of your power strip and the number of cords you have. Just make sure that the power strip will fully fit into the box and that you’ll have room for the bundled cords. Make sense?
Good luck with kicking your cord clutter to the curb!
